Hase-dera Temple
A Hillside Temple
of Prayer and Seasonal Beauty
Hasedera Temple, located in Hase in Sakurai City, Nara, is a historic Buddhist temple on a mountainside approached from Kintetsu Hasedera Station in about 15 minutes on foot. Its origins date to 686, and the temple later became associated with devotion to the Eleven-Faced Kannon. It is also known as the eighth temple of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage.
One of Hasedera’s defining features is the long covered staircase leading upward to the Main Hall, which is designated a National Treasure. From the hall, visitors can look out over the surrounding valley and mountains. The temple is also widely associated with seasonal scenery, including peonies in spring and autumn leaves later in the year, giving the grounds a different atmosphere across the seasons. For travelers exploring Sakurai, Hasedera offers a place where worship, architecture, and landscape can be experienced together.
