Kameishi
The Mysterious
Turtle-Shaped Stone
Kameishi is a well-known stone monument in Asuka Village, Nara, recognized for the animal-like face carved into a large block of granite. The carving is often described as resembling a turtle, which is how the stone came to be known as “Kameishi,” or “Tortoise Stone.” The monument measures approximately 3.6 meters in length, 2.1 meters in width, and 1.8 meters in height. Although it is a familiar landmark in Asuka, its original purpose has not been confirmed. Various ideas have been proposed, including the possibility that it marked a boundary or held some form of symbolic or ritual meaning, but no single explanation has been established. A local legend also survives, claiming that if the stone ever turns to the west, the land of Yamato will sink into mud. For visitors, Kameishi offers a thoughtful encounter with one of Asuka’s enduring historical mysteries.
