A Painted Tomb of the Asuka Period

Located in the serene hills of Asuka Village, the Kitora Tumulus is a 7th–8th century burial site famous for its celestial wall paintings and intricate astronomical knowledge. Discovered in 1983, this smaller but richly decorated tomb features murals of the Four Guardian Beasts (Blue Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise), a star chart, and vividly painted zodiac figures, making it one of the most important archaeological discoveries from Japan's Asuka period.

To protect the fragile artwork, the original tomb is closed to the public, but visitors can explore precise digital and physical reconstructions at the Kitora Tumulus Mural Experience Hall (Shijin no Yakata). Interactive exhibits, VR displays, and scientific models make the site a fascinating destination for history lovers and families alike. It’s a rare opportunity to step into the spiritual and cosmic world of Japan’s ancient elite—where astronomy met art and myth.
