About this tour

Step back in time as you stroll through Naramachi, the beautifully preserved old town district of Nara, where the spirit of Edo and Meiji Japan still lingers in every narrow alley and wooden lattice window.

This walking tour offers a rich encounter with traditional machiya (townhouse) architecture, showcasing the craftsmanship and design sensibilities of centuries past. Wander past charming storefronts selling handmade crafts, wagashi sweets, calligraphy tools, and artisan goods passed down through generations. You'll also visit a historic sake brewery still in operation, and learn about Japan’s long-standing brewing traditions.

The tour includes stops at small museums and preserved homes that reveal what daily life was like in Nara’s merchant quarters. From atmospheric backstreets to hidden gardens and architectural gems, every step offers insight into the cultural layers of one of Japan’s oldest cities.

Perfect for travelers who want to experience authentic Japan beyond the temples, this tour blends history, lifestyle, and storytelling into a memorable journey through time.
