Ofusa Kannon Temple

A Hidden Sanctuary

of Flowers, Sound, and Healing

Ofusa Kannon is a Buddhist temple in Kashihara, Nara, formally known as Kannon-ji and affiliated with the Koyasan Shingon tradition. According to temple tradition, its origin is connected with a woman named Ofusa, who is said to have encountered Kannon near a pond in the mid-17th century, after which a small hall was established at the site. Today, the temple is widely known as a place of prayer associated with health, protection from misfortune, longevity, and safe childbirth. It is also recognized for seasonal events that shape the atmosphere of the grounds, including displays of roses, summer wind chimes, and lanterns. These features give the temple a distinctive character, combining everyday devotion with a carefully maintained seasonal landscape. For visitors, Ofusa Kannon offers a different side of Kashihara’s heritage: a living temple where worship, local tradition, and annual observances continue to play an important role in community life.
