Oka-dera Temple

Asuka’s Mountain Temple

of Healing and Ancient Majesty

Oka-dera Temple is a historic Buddhist temple in Asuka Village, Nara, situated on the hillside east of the Asuka plain. Formally known as Ryugaiji, it is widely recognized as the seventh temple of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage and has long been associated with prayers for protection from misfortune. Historical tradition attributes its foundation to the monk Gien in the 7th century. The temple is especially noted for its principal image, a seated Nyoirin Kannon made of clay, which is designated an Important Cultural Property. Oka-dera is also valued for its setting: approaches through wooded slopes, views over the surrounding landscape, and seasonal flowers that shape the atmosphere of the precincts throughout the year. For visitors, the temple offers an introduction to both the religious culture of Asuka and the continuing role of pilgrimage, devotion, and landscape in Japanese Buddhist practice.
