Announcement

In June 2026, ICOMOS (the International Council on Monuments and Sites), the advisory body to UNESCO, recommended the inscription of the Asuka and Fujiwara Palaces and Related Sites in Nara Prefecture as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The property consists of 19 archaeological sites, including ancient imperial palace remains from the Asuka period and historic sites such as Takamatsuzuka Tumulus.

Following this recommendation, the nomination will be reviewed by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee at its meeting in Busan, South Korea, from July 19 to 29. Formal inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is widely expected.

To celebrate this historic milestone, Discover Nara has created a special Asuka & Fujiwara World Heritage Celebration Tour. Available for a limited time at a special commemorative rate, this tour offers a unique opportunity to explore the birthplace of Japan and experience the newly recognized World Heritage landscape of Asuka and Fujiwara.

We invite you to join us and discover one of the most important historical regions in Japan.
