Shobuike

Mounded Tomb

A Mid-7th-Century

Square Tumulus in Kashihara

Shobuike Kofun is an important burial mound in Kashihara, Nara, located near the border with Asuka Village. Designated as a National Historic Site, it dates to the middle of the 7th century. Archaeological excavations have shown that the mound was built as a two-tiered square tumulus measuring about 30 meters on each side. Its burial facility is a horizontal stone chamber, part of which can still be viewed on site from outside the protective fence. The chamber is especially notable for containing two house-shaped stone coffins, both with lacquered interiors and carefully worked details. These features suggest that the tomb was built for a person of high rank, although the identity of the buried individual has not been established. For visitors, Shobuike Kofun offers a clear introduction to changing burial practices in the Asuka period and to the refined funerary culture that developed alongside the formation of the early Japanese state.
