Tanzan-jinja Shrine
A Historic Shrine of
Fujiwara no Kamatari
Tanzan Shrine is a historic shrine in the Tonomine area of Sakurai, Nara, dedicated to Fujiwara no Kamatari. Official sources explain that the shrine’s origin lies in the reburial of Kamatari’s remains at this mountain site and the construction of a thirteen-story pagoda by his son. The name “Tanzan” is connected with the tradition that Prince Naka no Oe and Kamatari discussed their plans here before the events that led to the Taika Reform.
The shrine precinct includes a number of Important Cultural Properties, among them the well-known wooden thirteen-story pagoda. Its setting in the mountains of Tonomine also contributes strongly to the atmosphere of the site, which is widely appreciated for seasonal scenery, especially fresh greenery and autumn leaves.
For visitors, Tanzan Shrine offers a clear introduction to the intersection of political history, mountain worship, and shrine architecture in ancient and medieval Nara.
