A Historic Shrine

at the Western Foot of Mt. Tomi

Nestled at the western foot of Mount Tomi, Tomi-jinja Shrine has watched over this sacred landscape for centuries. Located in Sakurai, Nara, the shrine is traditionally said to have been founded on the mountain during the age of Emperor Jimmu before being relocated to its present site in the early 12th century. It is also listed in the Engishiki, reflecting its recognized status during the early Heian period.

Visitors approach the shrine along a peaceful path lined with more than 160 stone lanterns, leading to the main sanctuary and several subsidiary shrines surrounded by woodland. Also known as Noto-no-Miya, the shrine is closely connected with the sacred traditions of Mount Tomi, creating an atmosphere where nature and worship have remained closely intertwined for generations.

For visitors, Tomi-jinja offers a rewarding introduction to the ancient shrine traditions, sacred mountain worship, and tranquil landscapes that characterize the historic Sakurai region.
