Tomi-jinja Shrine

A Historic Shrine

at the Western Foot of Mt. Tomi

Tomi Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine in Sakurai, Nara, located at the western foot of Mount Tomi. According to shrine tradition, it was originally founded on the mountain in the age of Emperor Jimmu and was later moved to its present site in the early 12th century. The shrine is also listed in the Engishiki, indicating its recognized status in the early Heian period.

The precinct is approached through a path lined with more than 160 stone lanterns, leading to the main sanctuary and subsidiary shrines set within a wooded setting. Local and prefectural tourism sources note that the shrine is also known as “Noto-no-Miya,” and that its atmosphere is shaped by the relationship between sacred space and the surrounding mountain landscape.

For visitors, Tomi Shrine offers a clear introduction to the religious landscape of Sakurai, where shrine tradition, old routes of worship, and quiet natural surroundings remain closely connected.
