Tsubosaka-dera Temple
A Sacred Haven
of Healing and Himalayan Beauty
Tsubosaka-dera Temple is a historic Buddhist temple in Takatori, Nara, located on a mountainside overlooking the surrounding landscape. Formally known as Minami Hokkeji, it is recognized as the sixth temple of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. Public sources describe its foundation as dating to 703, and the temple has long been associated with devotion to Kannon, especially prayers concerning eye health. The temple precincts are also widely appreciated for their seasonal scenery, including spring cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, hydrangeas, and autumn color. In addition to its older buildings and pilgrimage history, the grounds include large modern stone Buddhist images created through cultural exchange with India, giving the site a distinctive visual character. For visitors, Tsubosaka-dera offers a clear introduction to mountain temple worship in southern Nara, where religious practice, landscape, and seasonal experience continue to shape the atmosphere of the temple today.
