Yoshikien Garden
A Tranquil Garden Retreat
in the Heart of Nara
Yoshikien Garden is a Japanese garden in central Nara, located beside the Yoshikigawa River and close to Isuien Garden. Official sources explain that the site was created on land associated with Manishu-in, a former sub-temple of Kofuku-ji. The present garden took shape in the early 20th century and is now open to the public as a quiet landscaped space near Nara Park.
The garden is organized into three distinct areas: a pond garden, a moss garden, and a tea ceremony flower garden. A detached tea house stands within the moss garden, and the wider composition incorporates borrowed scenery from Kasuga-yama and Wakakusa-yama. This arrangement gives Yoshikien a compact but varied character.
For visitors, Yoshikien offers a clear introduction to modern garden design in Nara and to the careful use of texture, water, and surrounding landscape.
