Monju Bosatsu Statue

Best known for its magnificent image of Monju Bosatsu, Abe Monju-in Temple is a historic Buddhist temple in Sakurai, Nara, traditionally said to have been founded in the 7th century and closely associated with the Abe clan. Dedicated to the bodhisattva of wisdom, the temple has long been a place where people pray for academic success, wisdom, and clarity of mind.

The temple's principal image is a large seated statue of Monju Bosatsu riding a lion, created during the Kamakura period and designated as a National Treasure. Widely regarded as one of Japan's finest Buddhist sculptures, it forms part of an impressive group composition that reflects the artistic and religious achievements of medieval Japan.

The grounds also include historic features such as burial mounds traditionally associated with the Abe family, together with seasonal flowers and gardens that enhance the temple's peaceful atmosphere. For visitors, Abe Monju-in offers a rewarding introduction to Monju worship, Buddhist sculpture, and the rich cultural heritage of Sakurai.
