Asuka Niimasu Shrine is an important old shrine in Asuka Village, Nara, associated with fertility, safe childbirth, and harmonious relationships. Although its exact date of foundation is unknown, the shrine is mentioned in the Engishiki, indicating that it was already recognized in the Heian period, and historical sources record that it was moved to its present site in 829. The shrine grounds are known for their quiet woodland setting and for sacred stones connected with prayers for fertility. It is also widely associated with the Onda Festival, a traditional rite held in early February that prays for abundant harvests and human fertility. For visitors, Asuka Niimasu Shrine offers a different side of Asuka’s heritage: not a temple or archaeological ruin, but a living sacred place where local belief, ritual continuity, and the spiritual character of the landscape can still be felt today.
