Emperor Jimmu’s

Mausoleum

The Mausoleum of Japan’s

Founding Emperor

Emperor Jimmu’s Mausoleum is an imperial mausoleum in Kashihara, Nara, formally known as Unebiyama no Ushitorano Sumi no Misasagi. It is traditionally associated with Emperor Jimmu, who is regarded in Japanese tradition as the first emperor. The site lies at the northeastern foot of Mount Unebi and is maintained as a place of formal reverence rather than archaeological display. For that reason, visitors encounter it not as an excavated ruin, but as a quiet, carefully preserved ceremonial landscape. The approach, lined with trees and framed by a simple bridge and gravel path, creates a restrained atmosphere appropriate to an imperial tomb. The mausoleum is also closely connected with the wider historical landscape of Kashihara, including Kashihara Jingu and traditions surrounding the foundation of the Japanese state. For visitors, it offers an opportunity to reflect on how imperial memory, sacred geography, and historical identity continue to shape this part of southern Nara.
