The Garden of the Former

Daijo-in Temple

A Hidden Gem of

Zen Elegance

The Former Daijo-in Temple Garden is a historic Japanese garden in Nara, located south of the Nara Hotel near the edge of Naramachi.

It preserves part of the garden once attached to Daijo-in, a monzeki temple connected with Kofuku-ji that flourished from the Heian through Edo periods. Official sources note that the garden was reworked in the Muromachi period by Zen’ami and his son, and that it later came to be admired as an important example of temple garden design in Nara.

Today the restored grounds center on a pond and are designed for quiet appreciation from multiple viewpoints rather than large-scale strolling. The adjoining Daijo-in Garden Cultural Center provides additional context through models and materials related to the former temple and its grounds.

For visitors, the site offers a clear introduction to the garden culture of medieval and early modern Nara.
