Isuien Garden
A Strolling Garden of
Edo and Meiji Nara
Isuien Garden is a historic Japanese garden in Nara, located between Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji.
Official sources explain that it consists of two distinct sections created in different periods: a front garden from the Edo period and a back garden from the Meiji period. Together, they show how garden design changed over time while maintaining the traditional Japanese emphasis on water, walking paths, and seasonal scenery.
The back garden is especially noted for its use of borrowed scenery, incorporating features beyond the grounds into the overall composition. Views of Wakakusa-yama, Kasuga-yama, and the roofline of Todai-ji’s Nandaimon are visually integrated into the landscape of the garden itself.
For visitors, Isuien offers a clear introduction to the art of Japanese garden design in Nara. The adjoining Neiraku Museum adds further context through its collection of East Asian art and craft objects.
