About This Tour
This walking tour offers a flexible way to explore Naramachi, beginning with a visit to Gangoji Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temple sites connected to the early history of Nara.
Originally part of Asuka-dera and later moved to the capital of Heijo-kyo, Gangoji provides an important starting point for understanding how Buddhism and urban life developed in ancient Japan. The quiet temple grounds offer a different atmosphere from the more crowded major sites, allowing visitors to begin the tour with a deeper historical perspective.
After visiting Gangoji, the tour continues through Naramachi, a district known for its preserved townhouses, small museums, and traditional streets. Rather than following a fixed route, guests can choose from a selection of cultural spots and walk through the area at a comfortable pace within the available time.
This combination of a historically grounded starting point and a customizable walking experience creates a balanced introduction to both the ancient and everyday cultural layers of Nara.

They are approximately 1.2 km (0.7 miles) apart. Be very careful not to confuse them. The meeting point is in front of the Gyoki Statue at Kintetsu Nara Station.
The tour ends when the guide takes you to Naramachi. This is where you will part ways with the guide. Naramachi is home to many restaurants, so after the tour, feel free to explore the area and enjoy a slightly late lunch or dinner at a place of your choice.
If you prefer to finish the tour at Kintetsu Nara Station, we will be happy to escort you there.
