Nawrap
Naramachi
A Living Tradition of
Nara’s Mosquito Net Textiles
Hidden in the charming streets of Naramachi, Nawrap is a unique textile shop that brings traditional Japanese mosquito net weaving (kaya-ori) into modern life. Founded by Maruyama Textile Industry, a company with over 90 years of history, Nawrap is the last remaining manufacturer in Nara that produces kaya fabric from thread to finished product—all in-house 1.
What makes Nawrap truly special is its philosophy of creating "growing cloth"—textiles that become softer and more absorbent with every use. Their signature products, such as multi-layered dishcloths, bath towels, and organic cotton hand towels, are not only beautiful but also highly functional: quick-drying, antibacterial, and eco-friendly. Each item is crafted with care, using natural materials like binchotan charcoal, persimmon tannin, and indigo dye, reflecting the spirit of sustainable Japanese craftsmanship.
A favorite among travelers is the “Edayori Fukin”—dishcloths printed with seasonal motifs and traditional Japanese art, perfect as thoughtful souvenirs. Nawrap also offers exclusive items like fusuma-paper book covers and kaya partitions, blending heritage with innovation.
Step into Nawrap and experience the tactile beauty of Nara’s textile tradition. It’s more than shopping—it’s a cultural encounter that connects you to the soul of Japan.
