Yakushi-ji Temple
The Sacred Home of Japan’s
Medicine Buddha
Yakushiji Temple is an important Buddhist temple in Nara, founded in 680 by Emperor Tenmu as a prayer for the recovery of his consort, who later became Empress Jito. Official sources explain that the temple was first built near Fujiwara-kyo and was later transferred to its present location in Nara after the capital moved to Heijo-kyo. This history makes Yakushiji valuable for understanding the transition from the Asuka period to the Nara period.
The temple is also known for its long architectural history. While many buildings were lost in later fires, the East Pagoda survives from the original early phase of the temple and remains a key example of Nara-period architecture. Yakushiji is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara.”
For visitors, Yakushiji offers a clear introduction to imperial patronage, Buddhist devotion, and the historical development of ancient Nara.
