Hozan-ji Temple
A Sacred Mountain Retreat
of Esoteric Buddhism and Ancient Faith
Hozanji Temple is a Buddhist temple on Mount Ikoma in Nara, also widely known as Ikoma Shoten. The mountain had long been used as a place of religious practice before the temple was revived in 1678 by the priest Tankai. The temple belongs to the Shingon Ritsu tradition, with Fudo Myoo as its principal deity, while Kangiten enshrined in the Shoten Hall became the focus of especially strong popular devotion.
Over time, Hozanji came to be associated with prayers for prosperity and worldly well-being, drawing merchants and other worshippers from the Kansai region. The temple precinct, spread across the mountainside, combines religious buildings, stone steps, and views over the surrounding area. This setting helps explain why Hozanji is valued not only as a place of worship, but also as a distinctive temple landscape.
