For centuries, Mount Ikoma has been a place of religious practice, and Hozan-ji Temple stands at the heart of this long spiritual tradition. Also widely known as Ikoma Shoten, the temple was revived in 1678 by the priest Tankai and belongs to the Shingon Ritsu tradition. While Fudo Myoo is the principal deity, Kangiten, enshrined in the Shoten Hall, became the focus of especially strong popular devotion.

Over time, Hozan-ji came to be associated with prayers for prosperity and worldly well-being, attracting merchants, business owners, and other worshippers from across the Kansai region. Spread across the mountainside, the temple precinct combines historic halls, stone stairways, and sweeping views over the surrounding landscape, creating a distinctive atmosphere where nature and faith have long existed in harmony.

For visitors, Hozan-ji offers a rewarding introduction to mountain Buddhism, esoteric practice, and the living traditions of faith that continue to draw worshippers to Mount Ikoma today.
